Russell Phillips, Sr. Obituary

Russell Phillips, Sr., age 89, of Buford passed away on April 24, 2018. Russell was born in 1928 in Buford, GA to the late Journey and Vannie Kilgore Phillips. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife Oneta Phillips. He is survived by his children Russell Phillips, Jr. (Amy), Ramona Phillips, Holli Gorrell (Ken), and granddaughter Sydney Phillips. Russell was the Valedictorian of the Buford High School Class of 1946. He attended Piedmont College and was a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army. He was co-owner of Tapp Funeral Home for 30 years, and during this time he served as Director of Buford Commercial Bank, the State Board of Funeral Service, and Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed investing in and appraising real estate. Russell was an active member of Sugar Hill United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club for many years, and also enjoyed spending time at Lake Lanier, the North Georgia Mountains, and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 29th at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM -2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Eagles Ranch or the Sugar Hill United Methodist Church.
